Who lives in a rainforest, under a tree?
Why, Spongiforma squarepantsii, of course. The newly-discovered species of fungi has more in common with the cartoon character than just a name, though - the fungi can be wrung out like a sponge and still retain its shape, a rarity among mushrooms.
The castor oil plant (Ricinus communis) is the source of ricin, one of the most toxic proteins known. Ricin is actively taken up by cells and inactivates ribosomes, effectively blocking protein synthesis. It is thought that castor oil plants evolved this toxin as a way to protect their oil-rich seeds from being eaten. | +

Petri dishes 1 is a new twist on my microbiology theme. Brightly-colored bacteria and other microorganisms bloom in their laboratory habitat - petri dishes. The contents of each dish are individually painted in watercolors, using a wet-in-wet technique. Then they are cut out and placed in their petri dishes (also hand-painted) and mounted on arches watercolor paper.
